Songs is the first of Zhao's series about the poor rural societies in the American Southwest. The story of a family on an Indian reservation, it's identical in many ways to her subsequent The Rider. More straightforward than her next films full of choppy edits, it lacks the lighthearted humor that make her later films more fun. Some unclarity in the timeline might have it demand a second viewing.
